Deep down the people with knowledge of the case know who's probably lying. Many simply don't care if a politician on their side of the political spectrum lies. They assume everyone's lying and it's part of the battle for power. You smear theirs, they smear yours and the one who succeeds at being smeared less than the other side usually wins.
